Gibbs Rounsavall: “365″

On August 30 2009 I challenged myself to produce one finished piece every day for exactly one year. Keeping with Milton Glaser’s philosophy, “Limitation stimulates the imagination”, I limited myself to making only self-portraits, using 11 x 17 Bristol paper, a variety of reflective surfaces, and any mark making tool I could find. Each drawing was completed with a caption thus becoming both a visual and written record of the year. This was a more intimate approach to expression than I was previously used to working. The result of the project was my gaining of a broader, truer sense of self and the reminder of how essential play is in the creative process.

-Gibbs Rounsavall

Gibbs Rounsavall teaches painting and drawing at Fairdale High School where he was the recipient of the Most Influential Teacher of the Year award. He received his Masters in Art Education form the University of Louisville and his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree with a Concentration in Illustration from Washington University in St. Louis. He resides in Louisville Kentucky and has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Green Building Gallery in 2013. His work can be found in public, private and corporate collections.

Henry Horenstein

Born in Massachusetts in 1947, Henry Horenstein was on a path to becoming a historian when he discovered photography. Captivated by the work of Robert Frank and Danny Lyon, Horenstein entered the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he studied with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. After completing his MFA at RISD in 1973, Horenstein’s first major project was a documentary survey of the people and character of country music. As a long-time fan, Horenstein recognized that the culture of country music was changing, losing the homey, down-to-earth character of “hillbilly” music, and adopting the slicker nature of contemporary country music. His goal was to preserve a vanishing culture by capturing it in photographs, and for a decade he traveled throughout the United States documenting the artists and audiences at honk-tonk bars, outdoor festivals, and community dances. The body of work that Horenstein created (published in 2003 as Honky Tonk) is a remarkable portrait of a distinct period in American cultural history.

Gwendolyn Kelly: “Meditation on Houses and Other Everyday Objects” in the Kentucky School of Art Gallery

February 26 – April 8, 2012

Gallery Hours: 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday

Kentucky School of Art is located on the NW corner of Third Street and Breckinridge Street.

Artist’s Reception: Sunday February 26th, 2pm – 4 pm

Gwendolyn Kelly is a curious MultiPurposeWoman who thinks too much. She wonders about the objects people throw away and the things they leave behind as they move through life. She questions her own everyday decisions to put potentially useful items in the trash. She picks up litter and too often finds things on the street and keeps them for possible later use. The works in this show are meditations on everyday objects. They were prompted by Gwen’s growing concern about the number of abandoned properties in Louisville. The pieces include … Shelter, a mixed-media collage incorporating a window from the now demolished house that use to be next door to Gwen’s home. Abandon, a beaded curtain inspired by Tibetan Prayer Flags and representing 16 forgotten houses on West Kentucky St. The Postcard Prompt Project, a crowdsourcing experiment to remind owners about their abandoned property. Property Protection Amulets, fiber collages available for barter.

Gwendolyn L. Kelly is a visual artist and life-long learner with a B.F.A. & a M.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Louisville. She has participated in many exhibitions including FortuneTeller, a one-woman show at Spalding University’s Huff Gallery, KY Jelly at Swanson Reed Contemporary, L is for Louisville!: A Children’s Abecedary & Art Book at The Green Building, Model Homes and Habitats at Bernheim Forest, the Water Tower Annual, and the African American Invitational Art Exhibition at Actors Theater. Since October 2005 Gwendolyn has hosted a weekly open-to-the-community jewelry making studio in the California Neighborhood in collaboration with ArtsReach Louisville – a program of The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. She has work included in Fiberarts Design Book Six and Seven published by Lark Books and has been awarded Artist Enrichment grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women.
